Hagley Park

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Ben had a soccer game today so we all went to the park he was playing at. Grace and I decided not to stay and watch but to walk around the park instead. There was a botanical garden there so we went to walk around there and enjoy the park. Once we left the gardens we ended up in a different part of the park and I asked for directions from this old man at a rugby match. Well that was a mistake… he told us to go the complete opposite way we needed to go. ( if anyone is in Hagley park and sees an old man, beat him up, it really doesn’t need to be the same one, any will do)
Grace and I wandered around for almost another two hours looking for the soccer pitch we left Ben at. Finally we arrived back at the botanical gardens and were able to find our way back around. This short paragraph does not come close to explaining how frustrating it is to get lost in a park in the middle of a city.

Afterwards we went back to bens and played settlers about 5 to many times!!!

Lewis Pass

Friday, April 29th, 2011

I woke up early, before the sun… and man my legs hurt so bad when I got out of bed. I am glad no one seen me hobble around the room like an old man trying to get my pants and shoes on. I bet I looked hilarious. I took some pictures of the sun coming up around the lake, it was so cold out, my hands were shaking so much it made a fuzzy photo so I went back inside to rekindle the fire. I sat in the hut and watched it get brighter out for a while and everyone woke up after a bit. We had some breakfast, packed up and headed back out. The hike back was great as well seemed a lot longer than the way out. The waterfall was nice but not photogenic as there was a big tree sticking out in front, so I didn’t take a picture. When we got back to the road I was really happy. Actually looking forward to a few more hours in the car. We stopped and took a few pictures of the lake, signed out at the visitor center and hit the road.

We talked to Graces brother Ben and decided to head to Christchruch instead of camping at another lake that night. We headed down through Lewis Pass, which was beautiful. I stopped frequently to take pictures but as I was shooting into the sun most of them are crap… Grace had heard of a spot in the river where people dug down and made a hot spring. We stopped at one of the commercial hot springs and it was like 25$ each… not happening. We stopped at a campground and went looking around the river for a while, no luck. About 15k down the road we seen a rest area and stopped there. We walked along the river a little bit and seen some people sitting in pools… we ran back and grabbed our swimmers and gave it a shot. Not super hot but warm enough. Problem was the mosquitoes were terrible, bad enough to ruin the time there.

We pulled into Christchurch and found bens apartment easily. We were really tired, so we ordered a pizza and went to bed.

Lake Rotoiti

The ferry was late leaving wellington but this ended up being a great thing. As we were pulling into the Queen Charlotte sound it was just becoming light and we were able to see the scenery on the way in. This was much better than it would have been if we would have got there in the dark. We didn’t stay long in Picton, I found a little café and had some very expensive breakfast. Then we were off to Blenhem, where we found the best op shop (2nd hand store) spent some money on some more wintery clothes… its been cold a few times. We did some grocery shopping as well as we were planning on camping at a lake.

The road out of Blenhem was beautiful, its full of trees changing colors and grape vines. It looked amazing. It was a bit over an hour drive to the Nelson lakes area. We went to Lake Rotoiti. We stopped in the visitor center and registered where we were planning on camping that night and what trail we were taking. It cost us about $18 for the night. We drove over to the trailhead and parked the car. It took us a while to sort out what we were taking and it was starting to get dark, we were racing the sun. The views along the lake were really nice, we crossed lots of little streams and it was a great hike. We decided it was late and the stop off to the waterfall would be better in the morning. We made it to the hut right as the sun was getting ready to set. There were two guys already there with a fire going so that was nice. We made our dinner and only sorta started the picnic table on fire!!! … lol We had ravioli it was good. We played cards then went to bed., oh yeah, I won the card game!!!
