Day two, several lagoons and flamingos

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Our guide told us to get up at 530 to have breakfast and be ready to go at 6am. We were all up had breakfast and then we waited… and we waited… and we waited. It wouldn’t have been to bad except the breakfast was just stale bread and jam. Not what we were expecting. Our guide finally showed up about ten to 7 it was not the way you want the day to start. No big deal, we all loaded up our gear and we headed off into the desert. The scenery was pretty monotonous, but I liked it, anytime I can see all the rocks because of lack of vegetation is a good time for me. We stopped and looked at an active volcano that had a vent on the side that was pumping out sulphur gas. It wasn’t much if you have seen other volcanoes but it was a nice first stop. The next stop was fantastic; we came across a lagoon that was full of flamingos. It was great the color of the water, the reflection of the mountains plus all the birds. I think I got some really great pictures here. We proceeded to stop at 5 or 6 more lagoons through out the afternoon., we seen a fox and a rabbit as well.

We had lunch in this canyon full of rocks it was pretty neat. We climbed up on some of them, lunch was really good as well. Shortly after lunch we arrived at some crazy rock formations one shaped like a tree. More climbing and pictures were taken here. After this stop it was a long stretch of desert. There was another jeep that we kept passing then it passed us and vice versa for a while. We coined the term “Jeep Frog” it was fun.

The last lagoon of the day was amazing. It was lagoon Colorado, look it up online. The water is all reddish brown and the salt ridges around it look like snow or glaciers. Grace and I decided that the red water was from dead puppies!!! It really is from a mineral in the water. There were tons of flamingos here as well. Our hostel was only ten minutes away by car. We had all heard lots of horror stories about how cold it gets on the second night and I think all pleasantly surprised by the hostel we stopped at. It was nice enough. We played cards again and then went to bed early, as we had to get up at 430.

I didn’t feel cold at all that night, except when I got out of bed to go to the bathroom. I would like to point out that I am still adhering to my flip flop philosophy; if I cant do it in flip-flops its not worth doing!!! That being said, my feet did get kind of cold!

Day 1 salt flats

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

Today we got up about 8am to get all of our stuff done before 1030. We packed up and headed to migration to get stamped out of Bolivia. Then we got some breakfast… I am so looking forward to being home where restaurants almost never mess up breakfast. Its not that hard people!!!

Afterwards we checked out of the hostel and walked up to the red planet office. We got assigned a driver and a Toyota Land Cruiser. We loaded all our bags on top and started to pile into the car. Seven of us in the car is pretty tight. Three in the back, three in the middle row and one in front, thank God we had some girls along. We rotated quite a bit but whoever had to sit in the back was uncomfortable. Even the girls got uncomfortable in the back. The reason it was uncomfortable was that the last row in the land cruiser was not made for any one over 5 feet tall.

Anyway… the first stop was at the abandoned train line. It was neat to walk around and climb on the old trains. Got a few good shots. Back into the car for the next leg of the trip, the salt flats!!! As we got closer the ground started to look like it had snowed, then everywhere you looked the ground was white.

Sunglasses are not optional!!! We had seen some guys mining the salt, and several trucks full of salt here and there. We stopped to take some pictures and taste the ground. Big surprise it was salty!!! We drove across the salt flats most of the day, with stops at various places to take pictures. We had lunch at what I am calling cactus island, it had a real name but I don’t remember. Lunch was good, and we had a good time exploring the rock of cactus island. After Lunch we had about an hour to go and try our hand at the forced perspective pictures. It took us a while and we still had lots of poor tries, but I think a few turned out really well.

Last little bit of the trip was to the edge of the salt flats where we found our first salt hostel. Almost the entire building is made of salt. It is really neat, the beds, the tables the chairs are all salt, not to mention the walls are as well. We even gave it a lick to make sure!!!

We all sat around and played cards until it was dark, a couple of us went out stargazing for a bit then went to bed. It was a great first day of a trip. This has been one of the best tours I have been on my entire trip!!!

Bus to Uyuni

Friday, October 29th, 2010

We got up at 6am to get to the bus station at 630 for our 7am bus. We tried to book tickets the day before all the way to Uyuni like Chris and James did but there was a problem so we only got tickets to Potosi. It was alright as when we got to Potosi we were able to get a bus an hour before theirs left. This was nice except the bus was not a lot of fun. It was overcrowded, hot and the roads were atrocious. I have commented on bad busses before and I am sure I will again, as they are an important part of travelling. It was amazing when we finally got off the bus, it was trying being on a bus one non paived roads for several hours.

Uyuni didn’t look like much, tour offices and restaurants. We booked into a hostel where we agreed to meet james and chris. Piedra Blanco, it was nice, a couple had just bought it this year and were fixing it up and making it work. I enjoyed it, it had a fantastic shower as well. Grace, steve and I did some shopping while we waited for James and Chris to get there. Then we headed to Minute Man Pizza, a must do in Uyuni. There was over an hour wait, we decided it wasn’t that must a do!!! We had pizza at another place, it was really good, afterwards we went to the Red Planet office to pay for your trip the next day. Easy peasy…

Back to the hostel, I read a bit we talked some then went to bed it had been a long day.
