Balcony jumping at Casa Del Mundo

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Today after breakfast I went for a hike to Hibilito and casa del mundo with two ausie girls and a guy from England. The Ausie girls had a two friends with pictures from the balcony at the casa del mundo. So we went and found the balcony. We spent a few hours jumping off the balcony. It was a lot of fun and I took tons of pictures, which I will get posted in the next few days. Chris the guy from London had lunch there and the rest of us had lemonade. The lemon aid was fantastic; mine was made with shaved ice and was perfect. We got rained on a bit on the walk back to the Iguana. All in all it was a great way to spend my last Friday here.
After I returned I spent a bit of time making the quiz for the pub quiz after dinner. Last week I had so many complaints that the quiz was much to difficult, so I tired to make it easier this week. I thought it was easier, and it seemed like people had more fun as well. So a win win. I was helping Ashley(new volunteer) close so I had a late night. I am going to miss this place.

Mi ultimo leccion de espanol!!!

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Today was my last lesson with Victoria. It went relatively well, being the last one we didn’t really do a lot of studying new material. I feel in the last four weeks that my Spanish is much improved. I can follow along with conversations, I still cannot respond quickly or in complicated sentences. But I am able to get my point across, even if I sound like a child when I do so. I am going to keep at it with my flash cards and year one book coupled with traveling in Spanish speaking countries for the next 11 months should be enough to consider myself a Spanish speaker. If not it is completely my fault.

Diving Lago Atitlan…

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Today was great I woke up early and got my push-ups out of the way and then I had some porridge (oatmeal) for breakfast. Andy and I had breakfast together then headed up to the dive shop. I had to try on three different wet suits, first one didn’t quit fit, second one I broke the zipper, third one fit like a glove, it was hard to get on and it was super tight but it worked perfectly. I only wore the farmer john part, as I usually get really hot while diving. I didn’t get cold at all it was great. We kitted up at the shop and walked down to the boat, it was about ten minute boat ride to the dive site, Agua Caliente. I had too much weight on my belt but other than that the dive was fantastic. We seen lots of fish mostly bass, but 5 chiclids, and tons of crabs. The most amazing part of the dive is the rocks on the fault line, there are vents along the fault that have hot water coming out. We stuck our hands in the mud in a few places and it was so hot in one spot I had to jerk my hand out. We spent the next 30 minutes just swimming around the volcanic rock formations. The bottom is very silty, it was fun to play with it a bit making the vis go to about nothing before moving on.
I am so glad I got the chance to dive here in a high altitude volcanic lake as there are not to many of these around with readily available diving. If you ever get a chance to come to Lago Atitlan I highly recommend doing a fun dive, or even getting certified here if you have the time.

Good thing I didn’t start diving when I first arrived, as I would probably have gone broke diving a few times a week. I will be doing more diving when I get to the Bay islands in about 10 days.
